Ninth Entry

More than 1,000 people have died in the US.

The Labor Department announced that 3.2 million people filed for unemployment.
All abortions including pill abortions have been banned in Texas. Somehow this relates to the Corona Virus.
Crime in LA is down 6%. Is that because the gun shops are open?

In preparation for mailing my mother an updated version of her will, I used the USPS postage price calculator – a web page I use more than any other. It provides the costs for mailing any item. Every few years the site changes slightly; today I found a brand new option “Cremated Remains: Learn about mailing Cremated Remains” – as the first choice under “What are you mailing.”

Riding home, late, I tried to count people who were out and about. From 21st Street south to around 11th Street there were nearly two people per block. Dog walkers, homeless people and others coming and going. I scan both sides of the avenue and count anyone I see between each cross street. Looking east or west along the numbered streets, I pass too fast to count, but the streets are more empty – no people or cars. Night after night it remains hard to believe.

In the Village there are fewer people along Seventh Avenue, about one person per block. Approaching Houston Street the count drops. Most blocks are empty, one person every three or four blocks. Vehicle traffic is beyond light. New York City transformed. A biker’s paradise.
