Ninth Entry

More than 1,000 people have died from Covid-19 in the US.
3.3 million people filed for unemployment last week.
Crime in LA is down 6% — is that because gun shops are open?

Abortions, including by pill, have been banned in Texas. Along with Arkansas and Oklahoma, they interpreted the covid suspension of non-essential medical procedures to include a complete ban on all abortions.

In preparation for mailing my mother her updated will, I used the USPS postage price calculator, a web page I use more than any other. Today, under “What are you mailing?” I saw a new option: “Cremated Remains.”

Riding home late last night, I tried to count people who were out. From 21st Street south to 11th Street along 7th Avenue — nearly two people per block, dog walkers, homeless people, and a few others coming and going. I passed too quickly to count anyone along the perpendicular numbered streets, but they definitely looked emptier.

In the Village, there were fewer people, about one person per block. Approaching Houston Street the count dropped to zero. Vehicle traffic is beyond light.

New York City transformed. A biker’s paradise.
